DESCRIPTION: Length 9mm. A striking rhopalid bug that has distinctive black and red markings, is quite hairy and has numerous veins in the apical wing. The legs and antennae are black. BEHAVIOUR: The young bugs appear in August and September. They are brownish in colour and covered in fine hairs like the adults. The species is a plant feeder on a wide range of plants. DISTRIBUTION: Mainly found scattered throughout southern Britain but spreading northward. HABITAT: Associated with a range of plants and so can be found in and around brownfield sites, woodland rides, hedgerows and gardens as well as coastal areas. PERIOD: Best seen in the summer months but can be seen all year round as this species overwinters in the adult stage. |
